“Have you ever heard the sound” he asked,
“A heart makes as it breaks?
When it’s handed so much more
Than it is strong enough to take?
For at any given moment
There is one set to collapse,
And if we sit inside the silence
We might notice when it snaps.”
Hearing nothing but my breath
I had to wonder how he knew,
When he stopped and softly said
That one had just broken in two.
“I must confess,” I told him,
“I never heard a breaking heart.”
“I didn’t either,” he replied,
“For that is the saddest part.”
