Once our design is ready, full of dummy texts, It’s now time to do a solid keyword research before making it live.

Keyword research is a process of collecting keywords (based on average monthly search and competition) relevant to our business in order to target it on our website.

If done incorrectly, You may lose tons of money from your desk.

Ok, let’s do a simple Math.

Consider you have a smart watch business in the US. Currently, you are getting average online sales of $100k from 1k sales ($100 each) each year when you are targeting main 50 keywords from the niche. If the actual profit from each of these sales is $40, the total profit would become $40k per year.

Now If the average cost of each keyword is $20, then the total cost for $1000 per month ( $12000 per year).

From this calculation, we can determine that the average profit from each keyword goes on to become $40k/50=$800.

Thus each optimized keyword would yield $800 if done correctly & vice-versa.

So how would you do it?

Let’s take an example of a client who wants to sell the smart watch in Canada.

To find the right keyword, we can execute the following steps:

Brainstorming:

Dig into the business services and brainstorm few keyword ideas. From this, I was able to get few keyword ideas like Smart watch Canada, best smart watch, Latest smart watch, Apple smart watch, Motorola smart wear, blah blah.

Wow, that’s great. We brainstormed 5 keywords in less than a minute. Now, we are good to go to the next step.

Google Suggestion:

We can now go for the Google suggestions with these keywords to generate few more keyword ideas. we can see that we got keywords like smartwatch Samsung, smart watch android, Smart watch for iPhone, smartwatch apple, smart watch kids, smart watch amazon, best smart watch 2017, best android smart watch 2017 etc from a single keyword “smart watch” that I fed to Google. Isn’t it interesting? From this simple process, we can manage to dig considerable amount of keywords.

Keyword Tools:

We can even use various keyword tools for this purpose. I will exactly show how this is done.

There are various tools for this purpose but the one I would recommend is:

1) Google AdWords keyword planner:

This is a wonderful tool for keyword research. One interesting fact about this tools is that it helps you find plenty of keywords in minutes and provides the keyword’s monthly search volume as well as the competition of that keyword.

2) Keyword.io:

This is also a great tool. Helps in generating Keyword ideas

3) Keyword shitter : This helps generating a large number of keywords in very short time.

So Now we have plenty of keywords (I had around 110) after going through all these process..What’s next?

keyword analysis:

– We now filter those keywords on the basis of average monthly searches and competition. We ain’t gonna take highly competitive keywords because that would take a long time and effort to rank. We ain’t gonna target very low monthly search keywords as well because users don’t use those keywords either. Basically, we are gonna take those keywords which are good in monthly search volume (not much high as 1m) and less competitive.

– After filtering keywords, We should have a considerable amount of keywords having a good search volume and an average competition. We now make a list of that profitable keyword and search for the competitor’s analysis for those keywords.

Competitor analysis for a keyword includes searching for that keyword in Google, and mining a list of competitors with their domain authority, Page rank and Alexa rank.

This step ensures us how difficult it would be to beat those competitors and what time it would take to rank our keyword. This is a very important process of keyword research.

Finally, We have a list of long-tail profitable keywords. Now we are gonn’a use these keywords in the meta setup.

3) Meta setup

Meta setup is a process of setting HTML meta tags like Title, Description, and heading.

Format:

Title-URL-Description

Meta setup Process

With a list of our researched keywords, We now target every page of our website with few relevant keywords which we want to rank for. Our keywords must add value to the content. We should never do keyword stuffing.

Title:

It should consist of 60–70 characters including space. Beyond this, Google would cut down the remaining character from search.

Example — say our final keywords are:

the best smartwatch, top smartwatch, smartwatch Canada, latest smartwatch, smartwatch 2017, apple smartwatch, Nikon smartwatch price

The title could be something like this:

Online smartwatch and tech gadget store Canada | Mysmart Gadget (62 characters)

Description:

Description should consist 140–160 characters including spaces. We should use our primary keywords here as well.

Description would look something like this:

The description should consist 140–160 characters including spaces. We should use our primary keywords here as well.

The description would look something like this:

Get the exclusive collection of latest smartwatch, smartwear and other smart gadgets online. Shop now and get a whopping 15% discount on all apple smartwatches. (160 char)

Best practices:

– Each webpage should have a unique meta title and description.

– Relevant keywords should be used in both title and description.

– keyword stuffing should not be practiced.

– Our keywords must add value to the content.

– Keyword insertion should be done quite naturally.

So, These were the step-by-step process to do an Authority Keyword research & Meta setup.

Let me know if you have any further queries regarding keyword research & implementing Meta setup.
