Climate. Food. Land. Pollution. Water. Wildlife. I believe we have the power to change our planet for the better and I’m taking action to give back.
Join me in making my 30th birthday my greatest yet. I’ve already pledged to give 1% of my income this year to environmental non-profits though 1% for the Planet. And, in celebration of my 30th year on this planet, I’m pledging to match an additional 1% of my income for each friend, family member, or long-lost acquaintance who pledges to do the same, up to 30% of my income.
I’m a big believer that climate change is the single biggest threat to our way of life, and that taking action now is essential to preventing the worst case scenarios. The change in the climate has been a slow and steady news story — without the day to day breaking news of politics and other concerns — but it’s never been more urgent.
That’s what’s driving me to give meaningfully to environmental causes. Whatever your reasons — whether they’re based around climate, water, wildlife, or preservation of a local park — I stand in full support with you. And I’m putting my money where my mouth is. If you become a member of 1% for the Planet in the next month by pledging to donate 1% of your pay or net worth this year, I will increase my pledge by 1%.
The steps are simple. To take the pledge:
1) Go to http://www.onepercentfortheplanet.org/individual-membership
2) Fill in the information at the bottom. You will be asked for payment information now to contribute at least $50 for membership fees now — to support the growth of the global network — but you have until the end of the year to fulfill your pledge and choose as many benefiting non-profit partners as you’d like, both global and local.
3) Consider creating your own pledge matching drive. If you are willing and able to contribute more than 1%, you could possibly multiply your impact. I have dreams that we could start a movement — no matter how small — of environmental altruism.
4) To help me keep track of pledges, please list me as a referral and fill in the information here: https://doodle.com/poll/47vkgwcbehwdrswx

Here’s more info on the incredible background of 1% for the Planet, in their own words:
“1% for the Planet is a global organization that connects dollars and doers to accelerate smart environmental giving. We recognize that the current level of environmental giving — only 3% of total philanthropy — is not enough to solve the most pressing issues facing our planet.
“Through our business and individual membership, 1% for the Planet inspires people to support environmental organizations through annual membership and everyday actions. We advise on giving strategies, we certify donations, and we amplify the impact of our network.
“Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, our members have given more than $200 million to environmental nonprofits to date. Today, 1% for the Planet is a network of more than 1,800 member businesses, a new and expanding core with hundreds of individual members, and thousands of nonprofit partners in more than 60 countries. Our headquarters are located in Burlington, VT with staff located around the world.”
