Nez has raised £2.9M in total. We talk with Joe Zender, its CEO.
PetaCrunch: How would you describe Nez in a single tweet?
Joe Zender: London’s leading food and drink discovery app, connecting Londoners with exclusive offers at restaurants, bars and cafes in their area #raiseyourlunchgame
PC: How did it all start and why?
JZ: I’d been working in office jobs for a number of years when I came up with the idea. I grew up in London, and watched the food and drink scene explode, but had found myself having the same, tired lunch every day.
There was one day where I walked past a restaurant that had put up a ‘Half Price’ sign outside but still didn’t seem to be getting much attention. I realised there wasn’t a digital equivalent to the conventional restaurant chalkboard, that connects local traders with a local audience, so I wondered whether there would be an appetite for an app featuring hyperlocal, real-time offers in London. Within a few months, we had the first version of nez being used in Fitzrovia.
PC: What have you achieved so far?
JZ: We now boast more than 165,000 loyal users, 350+ fantastic partners and have driven 350,000+ transactions for these partners, which include Pizza Pilgrims, Benugo, K10, HOP and Crussh. We’re now a team of 15, having doubled in the last 12 months.
PC: How will you use your recent funding round?
JZ: We’re going to invest in increasing the profitability of the high street through marketing campaigns, including a huge on-the-ground presence, as we scale across London. On top of this, we’ll be investing in technological innovation, attracting top talent and developing our new employee rewards platform, nez perks.
PC: What do you plan to achieve in the next 2–3 years?
JZ: We’re a London company, and will have a focus on the capital for the next 18 months. nez has just launched in a whole new part of London, now catering for Shoreditch, Spitalfields and Liverpool Street, but we’re already eyeing up our next area launch. Keep your eyes peeled, but we plan to be a loud and fun presence across the capital all the way into 2020.
The other big focus will be using nez’s unique technology in the employee rewards space — nez perks — which helps companies improve employee happiness with food and drink perks. We’re excited about the potential for nez to make an impact in the world of office perks.
