At exactly 18:15:05 UTC on January 3rd 2009 Bitcoin’s genesis block was mined and blockchain history began.

Though make sure you aren’t confusing today with Bitcoin’s 10th anniversary which was celebrated on October 31st of 2019 when the Bitcoin whitepaper entitled ‘Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System’ was published.

How BitMEX is Celebrating

While most major cryptocurrency and blockchain enthusiasts and websites are commemorating today by posting about it on the internet (including ourselves), BitMEX has chosen to kick it old school by posting on the front page of ‘The Times’ newspaper, British edition.

Reported earlier today by a CCN article, the Seychelles based cryptocurrency exchange decided to celebrate today by purchasing front page space on ‘The Times’ Newspaper featuring the message “Thanks Satoshi. We owe you one. Happy 10th Birthday, Bitcoin.”

Why the Newspaper?

You may be thinking ‘why would BitMEX spend money advertising in the newspaper? Don’t only old people read that?’ And while the traditional newspapers audience has shrunk in recent decades, it’s far from non exist. But there’s more to it than just that.

Transport yourself back to 2009. The markets crashed and almost all financial institutions throughout Europe and the US are in desperate need of a bail out. Satoshi founded Bitcoin with the idea of doing away with banks, so how fitting of him to embed the newspaper headline on 1/3/09 into the genesis block; ‘Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.’

It is a widely accepted fact that accepted premise that it was the 2008 financial crisis that fueled Nakamoto to create Bitcoin. Bitcoin was designed to be an alternative to traditional fiat currency that no longer required banks or government institutions, the two things that caused the 2008 crisis.

Did you Notice Today’s Headline?

Similarly to the 2009 headline, today’s headline talks of financial crisis. Today’s headline draws attention to the student debt crisis that is currently hindering the students and universities alike. Also you may notice how Apple is also mentioned on the front page as it’s stock has dropped over -14% today alone and the DOW is down over 600 points. It seems like financial crisis may once again be just around the corner…
