Yeah. Yeah. I know. You’ve heard it all before, right? I’m sure you’ve read a quote from someone and somewhere that tries to speak to you about potential.
You don’t need me to tell you about it. About how awesome the potential inside you really is. How that POTENTIAL can POTENTIALLY change your life.
I could personalize a bit. I hear storytelling is all the rage now. I will give it a try.
When I was 12 years old, my 7th grade basketball coach was upset with the way we were practicing. So he stopped practice and sat us down in the corner of the cafe-gymna-torium (awesome practice facilities). He told us how good we were. He said we were a championship caliber team. He told us we had great potential. It felt good. But then he said, “POTENTIAL MEANS NOTHING UNLESS YOU REACH IT.”
So there it is. My version of the story. But here’s the thing. That statement, 28 freekin’ years later still impacts my life. Coach Joe Long had no idea what kind of impact he would have on me. But his impact through those words proved have a lasting impact on the way I would approach life.
So why then is it so hard to reach our potential? The words were profound. They were meaningful. Yet I struggle. Yet there are times in my life when I can’t seem to reach my potential. So since I put a tremendous amount of pressure on myself, I started to feel badly ABOUT myself. Then I remembered. I remembered all of the business conversations, all of the 1:1’s, all of the coaching calls. I wasn’t alone. There were many others who had potential and struggled to reach it despite their best efforts and strong desire to do so.
We all have potential. But do we have the plan? The plan is the differentiator. The plan at least gives us a better opportunity to reach our potential. That leads us to the next question. Do we have the discipline to execute against the plan? We can answer that one another day.
Be good and God bless…
